Boonshoft Museum New Permanent Exhibit Teaches Children about Water Conservation and Stewardship

May 14, 2012

Boonshoft Museum Partners with American Standard and WinWholesale to Bring Water Conservation Exhibit to Life. A new exhibit designed to teach children about the importance of water conservation has opened at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in Dayton, Ohio, thanks in large part to a partnership with American Standard and WinWholesale, Inc. Through the interactive “Splash!” exhibit, museum goers of all ages learn about the earth’s water cycle, the impacts that humans have on water access and quality, and about careers — like plumbing, geology and environmental conservation — related to water stewardship. The museum contacted WinWholesale, headquartered in Dayton, about participating in the exhibit. Upon agreeing to take part, WinWholesale contacted American Standard to also partner with the museum. “We were pleased the Boonshoft Museum asked WinWholesale to become involved in the water conservation exhibit in our home town,” said Rick Schwartz, WinWholesale CEO and chairman. “We knew we could count on American Standard Brands, one of our most important product suppliers, to help with the display.” “The goals of this new exhibit perfectly complement our own efforts to promote the importance of water efficiency in homes and in the workplace,” said Jay Gould, president and CEO of American Standard Brands. The eye-catching displays employ familiar plumbing fixtures to help visitors understand how individual actions impact water resources – including aquifers, rivers, and lakes. The product donation from American Standard to the museum included bathroom faucets from the Town Square®, Berwick®, Studio®, Copeland™, and Portsmouth® collections, as well as a Pekoe® semi-professional kitchen faucet. “Increasing awareness about how our individual choices affect and improve water quality is an important mission for American Standard,” Gould emphasized. He pointed to the company’s broad selection of water-saving, high performing WaterSense®-certified faucets and toilets, in addition to the company’s partnership with the Green Education Foundation (GEF) to develop a K-12 curriculum focused on water conservation. Said Diane Farrell, vice president of external relations at the Boonshoft Museum, “We are confident that educating the public about the relationships between healthy water, healthy lives, and healthy economies through this permanent exhibit is an effective way to encourage water conservation. We are pleased to partner with American Standard and WinWholesale to advance this worthy cause.” ABOUT AMERICAN STANDARD BRANDS – American Standard Brands is a leading North American manufacturer of a wide range of high-quality building products, including faucets, fixtures, furniture, vitreous china fixtures, cast iron sinks, whirlpool tubs and other wellness products for the bath and kitchen as well as decorative panels. American Standard Brands Awarded Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Grant For Hygienic and Sustainable Toilet

April 12, 2012

One of the world’s best known toilet brands has taken up the challenge to improve safety and sanitation in developing world countries. American Standard Brands has partnered with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop and test a low-cost, prefabricated toilet system. Lack of adequate sanitation facilities affects around 40 percent of the world’s population, and around 1.2 billion people worldwide practice open defecation. An estimated 1.6 million people, mostly children under the age of five, die each year from water and sanitation related diseases. “A majority of these deaths are preventable through access to proper sanitation, safe drinking water and improved hygiene,” said Jay Gould, American Standard Brands president and chief executive officer. In collaboration with the Gates Foundation’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Strategy, and the International Development Enterprises (iDE), American Standard engineers will work to develop a prefabricated toilet system that is more hygienic, easier to install, easier to maintain and clean, and can be economically mass-produced.  “Our goal is to develop a safe, affordable, latrine for the developing world that does not require a water and sewer based infrastructure,” explained project director, Jim McHale, Ph.D., American Standard Brands vice president, engineering. McHale notes that improved sanitation will help achieve the United Nations’ 2015 Millennium Development Goal of reducing by half the proportion of people who lack safe drinking water and basic sanitation by the year 2015.  ABOUT AMERICAN STANDARD BRANDS – American Standard Brands is a leading North American manufacturer of a wide range of high-quality building products, including faucets, fixtures, furniture, vitreous china fixtures, cast iron sinks, whirlpool tubs and other wellness products for the bath and kitchen as well as decorative panels. New Faucet Delivers Filtered Drinking Water Straight From the Tap

October 28, 2011

Homeowners in search of the best filtered drinking water should look no further than their kitchen sink, according to American Standard, which hopes that its new Streaming Filter Faucet will make great-tasting water easier to enjoy and better for the environment. The stylish kitchen faucet offers an easy means of enjoying healthy, filtered drinking water while saving money and reducing disposable plastic bottle waste. The simplicity of the system is its secret. American Standard Brands, long a leader in water-conservation technologies, seamlessly integrated an innovative filter system with a contemporary styled single-control kitchen faucet to provide crystal clear, odor-free drinking water for approximately 10 cents per gallon, a savings of more than 90 percent over the cost of bottled water. The result is an eco-savvy faucet that doesn’t burden homeowners with the bulky and unsightly aftermarket faucet attachments typically used to filter tap water. “With so many alternatives available, it is unconscionable that we knowingly litter our streets, clog our landfills and endanger our ocean habitats in a determined quest for clean drinking water, which is readily available in the developed world,” said Don Devine, American Standard president and chief executive officer. “Our drinking water is tested daily for safety, so it’s a natural choice for health- and cost-conscious consumers who want to do more to help preserve the quality of our environment.” REDUCING PLASTIC BOTTLE WASTE – The company launched its new filtered drinking water faucet based on a growing concern over the mounting ecological issues associated with plastic water bottle waste. Nearly seven out of every 10 plastic water bottles – or roughly 70 percent of the estimated 28 billion plastic water bottles that Americans consume annually – are destined for the landfill, according to a 2008 study by the National Association of PET Container Resources.  Using the Streaming Filter Faucet can help a family of four reduce their plastic waste by as many as 5,500 bottles per year. Moreover, the ADA-compliant faucet helps homeowners conserve their budget while quenching their desire for clean, filtered water at a fraction of the cost. In fact, people spend from 240 to over 10,000 times more per gallon for bottled water than they typically do for tap water, according to the National Resources Defense Council. This American Standard filter faucet system offers a modern alternative to the limited volume pitcher-style products that take up valuable refrigerator space, or the costly bottled water delivery services needed for some water cooler systems.   EASY OPERATION – With the eco-savvy filtered faucet in the “off” position, users simply shift the faucet handle to the right to generate an endless supply of cold filtered water for drinking, rinsing, cooking, or filling a pet’s dish with clean, chemical-free water.   Thanks to an innovative dual-access system, homeowners can remove and replace the filter with a simple quarter-turn from either above (by removing the included accessories dish) or below the sink.  The replaceable carbon-based filter effortlessly removes 98 percent of particulates, 97 percent of chlorine, and 99 percent of lead. And, unlike most bottled water, the Streaming Filter Faucet does not remove any of the beneficial fluoride that is added by local municipalities. Additionally, cross-contamination between unfiltered water is eliminated, as the filtered water travels through a separate waterway. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY – In addition to providing an endless supply of crystal clear filtered water, every faucet is shipped with a reusable, stainless steel water canister so busy homeowners can take great tasting water wherever they go. Each cartridge filters approximately 250 gallons of water and should last approximately three months, based on average use for a family of four. The filter is tested and certified by NSF International and contains significantly less plastic than fully encapsulated filters, such as pitcher-style filtering systems, which means less potential plastic waste going to landfills. The Streaming Filter Faucet is the latest in a series of initiatives by American Standard Brands to raise awareness of practical water conservation solutions through award-winning product innovations and increased consumer choice. Good things come in small packages. American Standard illustrates this adage in two new commercial bath offerings that combine high-performance and low-maintenance features with innovative small-space designs. The new Lucia™ wall hung lavatory and Huron™ toilet are small in stature, but offer full-sized features and performance. Lucia Wall-Hung Lavatory Sink – The strikingly stylish Lucia wall-mount lavatory sink offers integral side shelves – perfect for storing toiletries – and suitable for small spaces such as medical offices, hotels, restaurants and condominiums. The practical design offers nearly 15-inches of usable storage surface and a graceful bowed front bowl that is complemented by an arching 2-inch back splash. The sink’s upscale and modern appearance is accompanied by an optional vitreous china shroud that offers a polished, clean-looking installation. The ADA-compliant sink features a single faucet hole, with additional models offering four- or eight-inch centers available in early 2012. Huron Floor-Mount Rear Outlet Toilet – The Huron high-efficiency toilet (HET) offers a unique space-saving shape in a floor-mount, rear-outlet design. Measuring a scant 24 ½-inches from the wall – nearly four-inches shorter than a standard toilet – the Huron toilet combines leading HET performance and product features not traditionally available to commercial specifiers. “Specifiers need versatile products like the Huron for space-challenged applications that require floor-mounted, rear outlet designs along with HET performance,” explains Tony D’Amato, senior product manager, commercial products for American Standard. “The Huron combines all of these leading features in one of the smallest footprints available.” The sturdy floor-mount design of the Huron toilet is ideal for institutional and healthcare/bariatric applications, while its Right Height® rim measurement of 17 ¼-inches makes it a solid choice for accessible and ADA-compliant installations. The high-efficiency, low-consumption toilet utilizes between 1.1 and 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf), while offering direct-fed siphon jet action with a 2-inch fully-glazed trapway and a 1½-inch top spud opening. In addition to its compact design, the Huron toilet mounts directly against the floor and wall, eliminating hard-to-clean areas. The Huron toilet features the EverClean® permanent glaze that inhibits the growth of stain and odor-causing bacteria, mold and mildew on the surface, helping it stay cleaner, longer.
